Your Photography Business and COVID-19

When the COVID-19 situation first started going down… I knew that now, more than ever, photographers were going to need to get serious about working on their businesses.

When hard times hit, here is a natural tendency to freeze and quietly wait for the storm to pass.

What I know after 21 years in this industry, however, is that playing it safe is often the worst thing you can do for your business.

I remember when the recession hit in 2008.  I saw SO many talented photographers in my area act out of fear.

They lowered their prices, cut corners, and pulled back on their marketing. And sadly, most of them didn’t make it.  It was heartbreaking to watch.

The photographers who did make it were the ones who chose to put fear aside and lean into their businesses.  I was one of those photographers.

Instead of playing it safe…

I invested in a $2000.00 coaching program, which, at the time, was a TERRIFYING amount of money.

I used the slowness in my business to learn how to get better at my business.

I studied branding and marketing.  I worked on my messaging.  I completely overhauled my website and my systems. And I did this all while at home, caring for my 18-month-old twins.

Yes, it was hard.

But when the recession was over my business was SO much stronger.

So why am I telling you all of this?

Because I’ve been watching what’s going on right now and I see SO many similarities to what happened in 2008.

And because you are a part of my community, and I care about you and your business I don’t want to see you make decisions out of fear that are going to end up hurting your business in the long run.

The truth is we are all being given a tremendous opportunity right now (even though it may not feel that way).  We are being given the gift of time. So the question is, how are we going to use it?

Now trust me…

I spent the first few weeks of quarantine in TEARS.  I miss my studio and my clients, and honestly, I miss my paycheck!  My family depends on that revenue.

And yes, I’m homeschooling my kids too, and cooking WAY more than I normally do.

But I also have time that I didn’t have before.  I’m FINALLY getting to things that have been on my to-do list for years!

And just like I did in 2008, I’m committing to using this time to work on my business. I also want to help you work on yours.

My advice,

Do the things that are going to help you grow right now.

  • Update your website

  • Blog

  • Reach out to your clients

  • Let them know what your plans are moving forward

  • Check the rules in your state and city.

I know we all want to get back to work but not at the expense of your health or someone else’s.

Just know we are all going to get through this and we will all be ok!
