The #1 Business Mistake and How to Avoid It
When I started my business, I began as a maternity photographer. I focused on newborn and maternity photography for about three years before quitting my full-time teaching job. I then launched myself as a photojournalistic wedding photographer.
HIGHLIGHTS
Every photographer I met who looked successful was a wedding photographer.
I thought I had to shoot wedding in order to make a living in photography. After all, photojournalism was on trend! I loved shooting new moms and their babies and was growing a portrait business, but I thought I had to pivot my business in order to be successful.
To be honest, I hated shooting weddings. It completely burnt me out to the point where I was not enjoying photography the way I used to.
I see other photographers making this mistake all the time.
They try to be something they are not, because they believe it is what they need to do to be successful. However, the secret to building a long-term photography career is getting clear on what you do and your unique point of view, and then doing it fearlessly.
When I quit weddings and focused more on doing what I loved, my business began to grow. When you focus on your voice, your work begins to take on an authentic style unique to you.
Let go of the "shoulds", let go of the trends and focus on YOU.
