Day Two: 2022 Marketing Makeover
During day one of the Marketing Makeover, you got crystal clear on what you want for the new year and set some goals for yourself and your business. Then you shared those goals in the Beyond Natural Light Facebook group! Now that you know what you want for your business in 2022, I want to know why you became a photographer in the first place.
HIGHLIGHTS
What is your why?
Why do you feel the need to turn your photography into a business? This is actually a really important question, because you can love photography and have a wonderful, robust hobby. A Lot of people do!
Wanting to build a business and a career out of your art is a different calling. I want to know why you want it.
Here is a little of my story. I started my photography business as a side hustle. I knew I was a good photographer and loved doing it. I thought I could bring in some extra income by doing the thing I loved.
Many of us start this way—sort of by accident. Where we go wrong is that we go into our photography business thinking that having a love of photography and the technical skills are all we need to be successful.
The truth is, in order to make a living as a photographer, being good at it isn’t enough. Turning your photography hobby into a PROFITABLE photography business requires a plan.
You need a roadmap to help you reach your destination. You need to know what you want, but to get there, you also need clarity around why you want to do this in the first place. Knowing why you want it is just as important as knowing what you want.
Your “why” is your passion. It's the fire. It’s that little voice, that whisper of inspiration, your calling. If you have something calling you, you answer. That is the universe asking you to step up! Knowing WHY you want something matters. It’s the thing that is going to inspire you and keep you going when things get hard—because running a business is hard.
I’m a passionate newborn and family photographer, and my greatest joy comes from photographing kids at every stage of their life. I believe children are smart and courageous and interesting. I’m fascinated by them as people; in fact, I was a kindergarten teacher before I was a photographer. Children are not always seen as the amazing humans they are, and I see them. Capturing them is a part of my calling and my life’s work—it's my why.
Making a living doing what I do is also a HUGE part of my why. I support my family doing this, and providing for them is the MOST important job I have. It motivates me, and so I unapologetically say that making money through my photography is also a huge part of my why.
Day Two Assignment
Taking all of this into consideration, what is your why? Why do you want what you shared yesterday?
Is it to freeze time? To capture moments? To support your family? To prove to yourself you can do it? To have fun in your career? All of the above? None of the above?
Let me know, and share your “why” in the Beyond Natural Light Facebook group!
