Inside the Six-Figure Studio: Dealing with Unhappy Clients
The Six-Figure Studio is my signature group coaching program that helps photographers fine-tune their branding, marketing and systems. During this group coaching call snippet, we discuss what you do when you have unhappy clients.
HIGHLIGHTS
Reframe how you feel about unhappy clients.
When you get a client that is unhappy with your work, it is easy to take it personally. Instead, try to reframe it and notice that this person is not your ideal client. Ask yourself how can I learn from this situation, create content from it and use it to bring in the right people to work with?
The truth is, you can't change the client's mind about how they feel about themselves. You can share that the photos are consistent with what is in your portfolio. You may apologize for them not liking them and share that you believe they are beautiful.
This happens to everyone, myself included.
I shared with my students that I have to deal with unhappy clients from time to time, too. One time, I took maternity photos for a client and thought they were beautiful. After our session, she said she didn't like how she looked and asked for a refund.
I got on a call with this client to discuss how she was feeling. I shared that technically, these photos are aligned with my style. It turns out that this client was having a really hard pregnancy and was feeling self-conscious.
I promised her that 10 or 20 years from now, she would love and value these photos. She did get her album and later on came back in for a newborn session. Sometimes you just have to get clients in the right headspace in order for them to love their portraits.
