B&H Women in Film and Photography Clubhouse: What's the Next Step?

HIGHLIGHTS

B&H gathered a handful of female photographers to have a Q&A and conversation about what it is like working in the male-dominated photography industry.

How did you celebrate international women’s day?

  • I took some self-portraits of myself.

  • We highlighted female photographers and had discussions about females in the industry on social media.

  • I collaborated with other female creators.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

  • I am inspired by the women I work with. My clients are mothers, and it is an honor to celebrate and capture their strength.

  • Branching outside of my niche and admiring all kinds of female artists inspires me. I love seeing what women are doing in many different areas.

any advice on avoiding burnout and achieving work-life balance?

  • Understand that you cannot be all things to all people. Instead, get crystal clear on what your vision is for your business and focus on doing what you love.

  • Really try to separate your work and home life as much as possible. Having a separate studio space was a game-changer for me!

  • Stop doing the things you don’t want to do. It’s easier to avoid burnout when you don’t dread things and don’t overpack your schedule.

Were there any barriers in photography you had to overcome as a woman?

  • I had to explain what I do and validate myself a lot. Men are not usually questioned about what they do.

  • There are different expectations for women, especially when they have kids. I felt a lot of mom guilt and had to explain that you can be a good mom while running a successful business.

  • People would try to tell me I was wrong and not doing things correctly.

  • I was married to a photographer for 10 years. When we went to events together, he would get immediate attention and I would not be taken seriously. I always felt the need to prove myself.

  • The industry has improved, but male photographers are still at the top getting the biggest jobs.

How do you support and connect with fellow women?

  • I participate in a virtual co-working space where everyone is muted but working together online. It is nice to feel like you are part of a community, even if you are home by yourself.

  • It’s important to have conversations like this one on Clubhouse. It also is important to surround yourself with friends and a support system of fellow women so you can grow together.
