3 Things You Need to Know to Create Beautiful Light with Strobes and Flash

Light and how we use it is a huge part of our job as photographers. Whether we prefer a light and airy or a dark and moody look, our styles and brands really are determined by how we use light in our work.

HIGHLIGHTS

When you know how to create your own light, you are in control.

Instead of reacting to whatever situation you find yourself in, you are able to go in with intention and create the exact light you want every time. It's really liberating to be able to do this!

There are three things you absolutely have to know in order to create the light you want. You need to understand how the size, distance and power of your light can help you achieve the light that you want.

The size of your light determines the quality of your light. The larger the light source relative to your subject, the softer the light. If you want to create soft light, you'll want to use a large modifier. That's why I have a really big modifier in my studio—I love really soft light!

Next is distance, or where you place your light. The closer your light is to your subject, the softer and brighter your light will be.

The power of your light is the last piece of the puzzle. If you like to shoot wide open and want the really soft light, the power of your light will have to be turned down. You can use a handheld light meter to determine exactly where the power on your light is going to be.
