What is the ACTUAL Cost of Being a Natural Light Photographer?

Most photographers that shoot exclusively using natural light often say their reasoning is because it’s free. Artificial light does require more start-up costs than natural light BUT did you know that natural light could be costing your business more than you think? Let me explain.

HIGHLIGHTS:

My story:

Now, I have more than two decades of experience in this industry and have been teaching artificial light for at least ten years, so believe me when I say, I’ve seen and experienced the actual cost of being a natural light photographer for myself.

When I was just beginning, I shot exclusively with natural light. However, natural light is not always available.

There are dark days, rainy days and situations that are less than perfect.

So, I tried to book my sessions around the weather. In Seattle, Washington, that was very tricky. We have a lot of rain and therefore, I had to cancel and reschedule A LOT.

Since canceling and rescheduling caused a lack of income for me and my family, I tried working with what I had.

This was a HUGE mistake. I ran into so many problems and just wasn’t able to produce the quality images that I was promising my clients. This not only affected my business and brand, but it also affected my confidence.

Working exclusively with natural light has more than a monetary cost

Simply put, relying on natural light causes:

  • Stress

  • Lack of confidence

  • Limited Hours

  • Inconsistency

By being able to create artificial light, you’re creating more consistency for yourself.

You’ll gain a better brand due to consistency and therefore a much stronger business.

So in the end, natural light has a lot of costs… You tell me, is it worth it?
