How to Avoid Harsh, “Flashy" Looking Light with Strobes and Flash

Don’t get me wrong, natural light is beautiful. However, it’s not always consistent. Due to rainy days & dark homes, natural light may not be available in many circumstances.

That’s why creating NATURAL LOOKING LIGHT with artificial light is such a valuable skill to learn.

Now, I’ll share with you the 3 most common mistakes that people make when initially starting with strobes & flash. These mistakes often lead to a harsh and flashy look that’s undesirable. I’ll also give you my best tips so you can avoid these mistakes when learning artificial light.

HIGHLIGHTS:

Mistake #1: Using the wrong modifiers

There are thousands of choices in all different shapes and sizes, it can be frustrating spending money on one that doesn’t give you the results you’re looking for.

My quick tip: Bigger is usually better in this case. Bigger modifiers often provide softer light while smaller modifiers usually create a harsher light.

Mistake 2: Not knowing where to place your light

You may have the right modifier, but you’re not positioning it correctly. Now, there are many different light patterns you can get very technical with, but my quick tip is the closer the modifier is to the subject, the softer the light will be.

Mistake 3: Crowdsourcing Settings

This is the BIGGEST mistake I see people make all too frequently.

People, just because certain settings work for another photographer, that DOES NOT mean that they will work for you and your set-up.

You have to learn how to create those settings for yourself. This is a skill you cannot avoid.

“It’s about more than just the settings. Getting good results with strobes and flash is about understanding how to get those settings”
